Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck costume
from
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
The shirt and breeches were, thankfully, the simplest parts of the Merry costume.  For the shirt, I used a shirt pattern with a rolled pointed collar.  To make Merry's "poufy" sleeves, I adapted a sleeve pattern to make a fuller sleeve that gathered into the armhole at the shoulder, and gathered to a long, fitted cuff at the wrist.  The fabric I used is called "weaver's cloth", and is a cotton/poly blend with a somewhat large weave that I thought looked Hobbity and rustic.  :)

For the breeches, I used a wonderful Butterick pattern for a pair of English Regency-style "flap front" trousers.  I made no adaptations to the pattern, except to shorten the legs and add the venting at the bottom.  The fabric I used on the breeches is a very soft, tweedy brown wool.  I used wooden buttons for the fly, waistband and the bottom vent.
Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions concerning this or any of my other costume projects!
